Personal Review:

I reread Flight of the Raven in preparation for the finale of the series. I enjoyed it the first time, but this time around I was struck by the beauty of the worldbuilding and themes. The writing is profound, and the characters are multidimensional. The struggle between light and dark added yet another layer to this already intricate story. Busse’s creativity shines in this powerful sequel! I would, however, recommend this book for readers 13 and up because of its depth and discussion of marriage.

One theme that I especially love is the discussion of redemption. Selene struggles to believe that the Light could ever redeem or choose her. After all, the Dark Lady calls to her relentlessly; wouldn’t it be easier to simply succumb? Her struggle with the Light reflects humanity’s struggle with sin and the redemption found only through Christ. Yet the book handles such themes without seeming “preachy”. Light and darkness are intrinsic opposites in the world Busse has created, and readers experience it in a unique way in this sequel. Review for book 3 –Cry of the Raven-coming soon!

Themes: marriage, love, courage, light vs. dark, grief, identity, sacrifice, redemption

Favorite Quotes:

“Following the Light does not mean there is no darkness. Rather, it means there is light in the darkness, even if it only a single flame. I’ve never been alone.”

“Dreams are where the deepest part of a person dwells. It is there that fears, hopes, and desires exist.”
